Have you heard of “Throwback Thursday”?
No?
Let me explain… Throwback Thursday is a where I share with you a creation that I’ve made in the past to give you creative inspiration, of course, this creative sharing happens on Thursday!
Today, as well as sharing a previous creation, I’m sharing a new creation with instructions on how to make it. So, let’s get started…
Keeping with my previous blog post where I shared my love for coffee… here’s today’s “golden oldie”
Last year, I made this “shaker” card for the owners of the new local coffee shop, Parkinson Cafe. (It’s been in business a year now! Congratulations!) When you shake or tilt the card, the contents of the window move about. Whole coffee beans with a few gold sequins were the “shakees” inside the card. I wanted it to be a bit different to the usual sequins and glitter… you can use anything for your “shakees” that you think is appropriate for your card’s theme… Glitter, sequins, punched shapes or something entirely different.
If you are making a shaker card for a builder or mechanic, raid their supplies for tiny screws, washers, nuts and bolts. For a computer enthusiast, old mini chips or small components are cool. Or, for someone who loves the beach, clean sand and small shells are perfect (make sure you seal your window well so you don’t have sand everywhere!) I DO NOT recommend using food or dirt inside your shaker card – it can turn yucky. Spices and coffee beans seem to last forever so they are okay to use but generally avoid most foods.
Here’s the materials used in this creation:
Whole roasted coffee beans, Holly Berry Builder Punch, Emerald Envy Card Stock, Cherry Cobbler Card Stock, Whisper White Card Stock, Crumb Cake Classic Ink Pad, Black Memento Ink Pad, Cherry Cobbler Stampin’ Write Marker, window sheets, foam adhesive strips, Stampin’ Trimmer, Paper snips, Fast Fuse and these items that are retired: Perfect Blend Stamp set, This Christmas Specialty Designer Series Paper and Gold Sequin Trim.
Now for this year’s coffee-themed Christmas card.
As you can see it’s a shaker card concept made a little differently. This time instead of using window sheets and foam adhesive strips, I cut up one of the pages from the 6″ X 8″ Photo Pocket Pages Variety Pack for my shaker window. The reason for this was to keep the card less bulky for mailing and also because I forgot to order foam adhesive strips and window sheets! Oops!
As you peak through dazzling diamonds glitter-filled window you can see the coffee cup and the word “Christmas”. This window has heaps of dazzling diamonds to hide some of the words on the coffee cup. (Yes, I’ll give you the supply list.)
Here’s a step by step guide to make this card.
The card front:
- Score and fold a piece of 10.5cm x 29.7cm Thick Whisper White Card stock at 14.9cm to create a top-folding card base measuring 14.9cm x 10.5cm. Use your Bone folder for crisp edges.
- Open your card base and use your layering squares framelits dies and big shot machine cut a 6cm square window from the card front (approximately 1.5cm below the fold line).
- Use your big shot and Layering squares framelits to cut a scalloped 7.5cm/3″ square that is has a 6cm square cut from the centre from a piece of 9cm x 9cm Whisper White Card Stock. This creates your scalloped frame.
- With your Stampin’ Trimmer, cut one of your 6″ X 8″ Photo Pocket Pages so that the pocket measures 6.5cm x 6.5cm. Cut it so that it only opens on two sides. Rub the inside with your embossing buddy (to reduce unwanted static).
- Add dazzling diamonds glitter (Remember: Don’t use too much if you want to see through your window.) and a few loose mini sequins, secure the edges with tear & tape adhesive or your hot glue gun. (You can also use a fuse tool if you have one). Fold washi tape along the length of the edges to make sure no glitter escapes.
- Create a border on your filled “window” using the Year of Cheer Specialty Washi Tape.
- On the Thick Whisper White card base add some tear & tape adhesive along the edges of the window opening and stick your dazzling diamonds filled window in place.
- Adhere 7 strips of Year of Cheer Specialty Washi Tape to the front of your card and run two strips of washi tape over the edges of the window to make sure it is very secure.
- Stamp the word “Wish” in black memento ink to the bottom right of the card. (This stamp is from the Ready for Christmas stamp set – I masked the other words with old washi tape.)
- Use tear & tape adhesive to add the die cut scalloped frame to the window.
So that’s the front done… That wasn’t too hard, was it? You aren’t quite finished yet.
Inside the Card:
- On a piece of Be Merry Designer Series Paper (6cmx8cm) stamp a Merry Cafe coffee cup in black memento ink.
- In black memento ink stamp the cup lid on a piece of whisper white (6cmx2cm)
- Stamp “Christmas Cheer” in black on whisper white (6cmx4cm). Then in Cherry Cobbler ink stamp the border (Coffee Cafe) around the words.
- Cut out the stamped images using the Coffee Cups Framelits dies and Big Shot. (Remember the Coffee Cafe stamps and Coffee Cups Framelits come in a bundle.)
- Assemble the coffee cup and adhere to a copper foil piece (9cmx9cm) using fast fuse.
- Stick Copper foil to the inside of the base card using fast fuse approximately 1.5cm below the card fold. BEFORE you stick it down ensure the top part of your coffee cup is visible through the window.
- Make a frame around the edges of the window using Year of Cheer Specialty Washi Tape – Line it up so it hides the back of the washi tape on the front of the window.
- Finish with silver and gold Year of Cheer Specialty Washi Tape
Voila! All Done!
I’d love to see your Christmas shaker cards and coffee themed creations, so make sure you share them with us. If you liked this tutorial make sure you tell me in the comments below.
