Happy Thursday!
This morning my darling daughter, Paris, our pampered pooch, Delphi Dog and I grabbed a half hour together at our local cafe between vet visits and my lunchtime appointments. These coffee dates with my darling daughter are cherished as they are difficult to come by – She is time poor and somehow juggles her University workload, two part time jobs, exercise, visits to her dad and his family, maintains friendships and the hectic social life that 20-year-olds have! Of course, I jumped at the chance of a spontaneous Thursday morning catch up. It was perfect ray of happiness on a hot grey, rainy morning.
As I was drooling at the delights in the cafe’s cake cabinet, I overheard a man ask his companion as he returned to the table “well did you get him a nice birthday card?” The reply was “NO! They were hideous and so EXPENSIVE! We don’t have time to go looking for a card!” They looked distraught! For these men finding the right heartfelt card was as important as the carefully chosen gift.
Our local cafe is located in a busy shopping centre with a supermarket, discount store, newsagent and a chemist; businesses that sell greeting cards. Surely, one of those businesses could manage to sell a decent or even a nice card? Apparently not!
Seeing someone unhappy because they can’t find a birthday card doesn’t sit well with me. My overfull handbag often contains my handmade birthday card creations. Luckily today my handbag card stash had a collection of bright happy birthday cards. I took matters into my own hands and “gifted” these gentlemen a unique handmade birthday card. You should have seen their faces. They were beaming and couldn’t thank me enough.
Never have I seen anyone that excited over a birthday card they are giving away or that doesn’t contain money! It’s amazing how making a card and giving it to someone who needs it totally changes their day! It’s lovely to spread a little happiness! I felt so good about making them happy that I didn’t even have cake! But not quite happy enough to forgo my coffee – close but not quite.
You can share happiness too – even if you aren’t giving someone a card.
It’s really easy and wont cost you a cent. Next time you hear of a friend, family member, business owner or work colleague who:
- laments about the lack of high quality, reasonably priced Christmas, Birthday or other greeting cards
- desires handmade thank you cards or invitations for their business or event (or the supplies or instruction on how to make them)
- wants unique fun table gifts or gift bags for their Halloween, Christmas or Birthday party or event
- would like to spend social time with others while creating something special
- feels overwhelmed by boxes of old photos that they want to put in albums in a meaningful way but complicated scrapbooks are too scary
- is traveling soon, wants to journal their trip but doesn’t know where to start or what they need
- needs an excuse to get a few people together for a “party” themed creative event
- loves the latest “journal” or “memory keeping” trends but doesn’t know where to start or has started and needs good quality supplies or a little help
- forever searches for coordinated high quality coordinated craft supplies
- a unique guest book or handmade gift
