I love Bubbles! Don’t you? I love how bubbles catch the light and float on the wind. I just have to share with you this super easy bubble technique. One of the best things about my job is having the opportunity to experiment. There is some very rewarding about taking items that we use every day and incorporating them into unique creative backgrounds for cards, journals and scrapbooks.
A few weeks ago, I shared with my email subscribers a video of fun little technique that I like to call “bubble backgrounds”. I recently shared a card made with this technique in the comments of a Stampin’ Up! Facebook post and I’ve had heaps requests to share how I made the background. Although I wanted to keep the technique exclusive to The Creative Eclectic subscribers, I’ve had way too many requests to ignore! So I’ve given in and decided to share my bubble technique with everyone! Let me warn you, it can get messy! And you might get a little addicted!
But first, here are the two cards I shared on Facebook:

Both these cards feature the Brusho Crystal Color in Prussian Blue and the High Tide stamp set. Every time you do this technique, you will get completely different results. That’s part of the reason it is so much fun. If you like consistency and tidiness, this probably isn’t the technique for you.
The inspiration
Inspiration for this technique came from a YouTube video where they use water-based paints, dish washing liquid, a dish of water and a straw much like we did in pre-school or kindy (Kindergarten). Me, being the curious soul that I am, wondered “could that work with Stampin’ Up! ink refills?” As I was making the video on a whim I thought “let’s see if Brushos work better?” so I “gave it a whirl”.
Now to video:
Trust me it is heaps of fun!
Besides who doesn’t like to blow bubbles? It is probably the most fun that you will ever have as an adult with dish washing liquid, a tub of water and a paper straw! Apparently going to the park and blowing bubbles isn’t an acceptable “adult” thing to do! So this simple technique is a good excuse to unleash your inner bubble-blowing child.
Here’s the two of the other projects featured in the video. These projects have a more subtle background and use classic ink refills in Daffodil Delight and Bermuda Bay instead of the Brusho.

Ready to try this at home? Here are my 5 top tips to help you out:
- Use a really cheap bubble washing up detergent! The more it bubbles the better!
- Darker ink refills give you a much better contrast than the light ink refills!
- The more ink or brushos you add the deeper the colour.
- Use either water colour paper or shimmery white for the best results.
- Don’t suck the soapy water up the straw. (Sounds obvious, I know but it tastes horrid. Just trust me!)
Supplies you need are:
- Watercolor Paper [122959] OR Shimmery White A4 Card Stock [121717]
- Brusho Crystal Colour [144101] or a classic ink refill of your choice
- Dish washing liquid or washing up detergent
- paper straw
- a rectangle shallow dish bigger tan your card front
Give it a go! I’d love to see what you make! Make sure you share your projects with me!
