Shark Week with a twist continues

Welcome to project 3 of our Shark Frenzy Bundle Showcase AKA Shark Week with a twist. Hope you’ve enjoyed the Shark Frenzy projects so far. (Here’s the link to yesterday’s card in case you missed it)

Today’s creation is a bit of fun and packed full of shark frenzy techniques. Take a look!

What are the techniques?

This card features no fewer than 5 techniques

  1. Two-Step Stamping
  2. Heat Embossing
  3. Embossing using a die-cutting machine
  4. Die-cutting
  5. Masking & Blending using the blending

Let’s talk a little about how these Shark Frenzy techniques were used:

Two-step stamping

On this card, two-step stamping is actually three-step stamping.  I stamped the shark on a scrap of white in memento black ink.  Then, I stamped the shark’s body in basic grey.  I was distracted and didn’t ink my stamp properly so it was a bit blotchy.  So I then cleaned off the stamp and stamped over the basic grey with smoky slate ink. Sharks don’t have perfect uniformly coloured skin so I am happy with how this turned out.

Heat embossing

The words at the bottom of the project were heat embossed by:

  • first wiping the Designer series paper (DSP) with an anti-static cloth (embossing buddy) then
  • stamping the words with Versamark Ink
  • Sprinkling with white embossing powder
  • shaking the excess embossing powder back into the container
  • heating with the heat tool until the powder changes to look glossy.
Dry Embossing & Die Cutting

A piece of whisper white was first embossed using the Seabed Embossing folder and die-cutting machine.  Then it was die-cut into a 3¼” circle (approximately).

Three lots of little calypso coral fish were die cut. (Hint: attach some self-adhesive sheets to the back of the card stock before die-cutting these – it makes them much easier to attach to the project – no messy glue).   The two leftover fish were used to decorate the inside of the card along with a ¼” strip of DSP. The stamped shark was also die cut.

Masking & Blending

First up, the areas of the 3-d emboss circle that I didn’t want to be light blue (seaside spray) were covered/masked with a post-it note, then I used the new blending brushes in a circular motion to colour the exposed white space – be sure to start from off the edge.  Once that triangle was dark enough I removed the mask and covered the coloured triangle area with a post-it note and started colour the top third with Balmy Blue Ink, I blended the middle third with pacific point be sure to overlap the bottom third.  The last blended colour at the bottom of the circle is Night of Navy.   This was the very first time I’ve used these blending brushes and I must say they are so much easier to blend with than the sponge daubers.

I’m pretty impressed by my first attempt at using the new blending brushes. I’m positive they’ll get a big workout in the future.

The Shark Frenzy techniques combined

Here’s one last look at the completed project.

As you can see using a number of relatively simple techniques together create a big impact. I’d love to see you have a go at some of these techniques.

Now, who am I going to give this card to? I’m sure that I’ll find a Baby Shark fan somewhere.

If you enjoyed this or any of the Shark Week Projects project, be sure to leave a comment below. I’ve listed all the materials at the bottom of the post.

Until next time… Happy Creating!
