With Father’s Day just around the corner in Australia, it’s prime time to dive into those heartfelt Father’s Day crafts, whether it’s crafting scrapbooks, mini albums, or quirky Father’s Day cards.
It’s also the perfect moment to whip up some manly-themed cards for your collection. Who else enjoys having a stack of cards ready to go for any surprise occasion? It’s like having a secret weapon of thoughtfulness up your sleeve!
What colours do you create with?
I chatted with this awesome older dude who despised dull, earthy cards. He’s all about vibrant colours, fancy ribbons, and even a touch of bling! Yes, you heard right – this grand dad’s all about that bling and ribbon life!
Inspired by his colourful preferences, I went on a top-secret mission, scouring the shelves of newsagents, supermarkets, and even stores like Myer, Kmart, Target, and Big W for manly cards.
To my surprise, most store-bought cards for men were either brown or blue, AND lacking in bling and ribbon. As I peeked into my own card collection, I noticed a trend – my handmade cards for men also leaned towards neutrals and blues.
Toss out the rulebook on colours!
For ages, crafting experts have nudged us towards the same old colour palette, claiming it’s the only way to go.
But hold up! Our guys deserve more!
Just because masculine themes often stick to dull colors doesn’t mean you have to follow suit. It’s time to rebel against the norm and splash any color you fancy on your creations.
If your fella adores pinks and purples, go for it. Your cards can be vibrant or mellow, loud or soft. The power is in YOUR hands.
Use colour to bring joy!
Lots of my friends struggle making masculine cards… Maybe they struggle because the colours they are trying to create with don’t spark joy? If you are using colours that you enjoy using and make you happy, it is much easier to create a great project.
Look at the colours they wear and use.
When creating a project tailored for your man, pay attention to the colours they wear, or surround themselves with. Let me elaborate…
When I first met my husband, Steve, his home had minimal furniture (there were lots of empty rooms and no clutter), but the standout piece was his striking red couch. As we decorated together over the years, he introduced other vibrant colors like a deep purple chaise lounge, a bright blue fence, red kitchen appliances, and artwork featuring hints of gold leaf. Even the plants he selects for our garden boast bright flowers or colorful leaves.
While Steve’s wardrobe mainly consists of navy, grey, and black, he does have a collection of unexpectedly colorful shirts and an array of vibrant character socks. One of his favourite navy dress shirts is adorned with tiny pink flamingos, and another features a pale pink Hawaiian theme with bright pink flamingos and green palm trees – all chosen by him, not influenced by my love for flamingos.
The red couch, colourful fence, vibrant artwork, quirky socks, and lively shirts are clear indicators that Steve appreciates colour. This gives me the green light to design colorful cards for him.
What colour combinations can I use for men?
I won’t be flippant and say use whatever colour you like (which, of course, you totally can!)… and I will give you a few combinations that might challenge your thinking.
Here’s combination number 1:

Here are two ways I used this combo:
First up is with the Thoughtful Journey Designer Series Paper and the Beside Me cling stamp set.

The second is with the Adventurous Sky Bundle and Take to the Sky Suite. This interactive slider card was created during my Tuesday Night Lights Facebook Live. You can watch the tutorial replay here.

Combination No 2:
Maybe pink is pushing your comfort zone too far? How do you feel about orange?
