The Inspiration Photo

Inspiration photo for retro Christmas card colour combination - features a soft turquoise wall, the cream sofa and Bold cushions in red, green and turquoise that pop beautifully against the neutral base,

Today’s inspiration photo is pure retro Christmas joy. The soft turquoise wall instantly sets a cool, mid-century tone, while the cream sofa keeps everything grounded. Bold cushions in red, green and aqua pop beautifully against the neutral base, delivering festive cheer that feels playful rather than overdone. It’s cheerful, clean and unapologetically fun.

My Project

Retro Christmas colour inspiration using blue, green and red tones. See how stamped backgrounds replace patterned paper beautifully.

The original colour combination for Day 14 was Granny Apple Green, Pool Party, Real Red and Basic White… but I’ll admit I took a little poetic licence. Somewhere between projects I mistakenly swapped the Pool Party card base with Coastal Cabana and even introduced a touch of Summer Splash ink to create a pool party, summer splash and coastal cabana ombre. And honestly? It still works. Those extra blue-green tones stay true to the inspiration image and reinforce that cool, retro vibe.

For my card, I skipped patterned paper entirely and created my own background by repeatedly stamping holly leaves directly onto the card base. It’s a simple technique but incredibly effective — and a great reminder that you don’t always need DSP when you’ve got stamps and ink at your fingertips. The layered sentiment panel keeps the design clean and lets the colours do the talking.

Why this works:

This palette strikes a lovely balance between cool and warm tones. The blues keep things fresh, the greens anchor the design, and the pops of red give that unmistakable Christmas feel. Repeating the holly motif creates cohesion and polish, even though the card itself is wonderfully straightforward. (and perfect for posting)

If there’s a takeaway from today’s card, it’s this: trust your supplies, embrace happy accidents, and don’t be afraid to adapt mid-project. Sometimes the best designs come from simply rolling with it.

Tomorrow’s colour combination shifts gears again — with a very different festive mood coming your way.
Until next time… happy creating.
