Cards For Troops – World Card Making Day
World Card Making Day – save the date to help our troops!
Saturday, 5th October is World Card Making Day.
Each year, Cards for Troops send boxes of handmade cards to serving Aussie troops around the world so that they can write to their loved ones, friends and family in a lovely handmade card. By sending a card made with love our troops are able to stay connected with their loved ones waiting at home. Imagine the delight of a child when they receive a card from their mum, dad, or favourite aunt/uncle who they haven’t seen in months. Nothing quite matches seeing your loved one’s handwritten words and knowing when they wrote that card they were safe if only for a little while. it is very reassuring. Trust me!
Many of our troops are deployed overseas, where there are no local card shops, and they really appreciate the efforts of people who are able to send them good quality handmade cards to send home.
There is a another reason these cards are so important…
Studies show that military personnel who do “normal” civilian activities (e.g. writing a Christmas or Birthday cards, buying presents and organizing things for their home or family) transition better when they leave the Defence force. There is some evidence to suggest they also are better able to manage Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). My best mate suffered PTSD after being stationed in East Timor and my uncles also suffered. This is why this cause is so dear to my heart.
Your help is needed…
Come along to make a handmade card or two that will be donated to the Card for Troops Campaign. If you’ve never made a card before that’s okay, I’ll help you out.
You can make any style or occasion card that you like. I love You, Young boy & girl birthday cards (ages 3-12), teen birthdays (both boy & girl) & adult male birthdays are always needed.
Of course, you can bring your own materials to use up those bits and pieces in your stash or use the card packs and paper from my stash. It is a wonderful opportunity get together to create, inspire each other, share ideas and support our troops who selflessly serve our country.
Make one card or stay the whole afternoon!
Bring your own scissors and adhesive and some afternoon tea to share. Tea and Coffee will be provided.
If you’d like to come to this free event, please RSVP on the Facebook Event before Wednesday 2nd October 2019.
I can’t make it but want to help
If you can’t come on the day, you can still donate cards and envelopes before 5th October. Just keep in mind a few rules:
- Please ensure your cards do not contain any glitter as this can fall off and get on their combat fatigues. Glitter reflects light so we don’t want our troops to have any glitter at all on them when out on patrol. We want to keep them safe.
- Make sure you card is reasonably flat with no metal embellishments or huge bows that could get caught in the Post Office’s machines.
- Standard size cards that fit in a C6 envelope are preferred.
Thanks for your help!
