Later this month, my friend Vickie and I are hosting a Crafts & Champagne for Charity fundraiser for Heart Kids. I have mentioned it in my newsletter, on my social media but completely forgot to write about it here on the blog. Oops.
One of the things, I love about my stamping business is that it gives me an opportunity to “give back” or is it “pay it forward” in my community. That might through donating handmade cards or products, supporting community events by having a stall, mentoring others, running raffles, hosting fundraising events or championing other small businesses. Despite all the challenges that I face health wise and in other aspects of my life, I am extremely lucky that we have a safe home and access to good food, can usually pay our bills (sometimes it’s a stretch), and we are surrounded by people who love us. For this, I am grateful every single day.
Not everyone is as lucky as us, so making someone’s day brighter and helping is incredibly important to me. Stampin’ Up!’s Statement of the Heart talks about sharing what we love and making a different in the lives of others. I subscribe to the theory that “if you can be anything, be kind“. A little kindness makes a big difference in ways, you can never really imagine.
Why HeartKids?
One of our Stampin’ Up! friends, Tiffany’s beautiful little girl, Zara was born with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). In her short life, Zara has endured so much as most of the wall between the two ventricles of her heart is missing. Her only chance of survival is to undergo three stages of palliation open heart surgeries. These surgeries will save her life. Zara has had the first two surgeries and is doing well – her third is scheduled just before her 5th birthday. Even with the surgeries, CHD is a life long battle, and the best Zara can hope for is that her quality of life is improved. Every single day is a gift.
HeartKids has been an incredible support for Tiffany, her husband Claude and their family during Zara’s toughest times. This support ranged from texts and phone calls just to check in, meeting with their support networks and providing frozen meals for those long hospital stays.
Zara has become a a Heart Warrior raising funds so that other families can have similar access to the wonderful support that Zara’s family received.
As you may know, my husband, Steve had an unexpected an open heart quadruple bypass in 2018. At the time, I felt so incredibly alone – I would have welcomed a text or an opportunity to talk to someone who had experienced what we were going through, a frozen meal when I was ferrying him to rehab or sitting by his beside in ICU would have been a godsend. There is nothing quite as lonely as the Cardiac ICU waiting room at 1am – your mind can play some serious tricks on you. I don’t wish for anyone to experience what I went through alone, which is why the services provided by HeartKids are so important.
If you can’t make the event, you can help Zara’s fundraising efforts by making a donation to Zara-the-HeartWarrior So far, Zara has raised over $3100. (Her goal was $1000 – way to go Zara!).
