When You Hit a Creativity Block:

Ever sat down at your craft desk, full of good intentions… and nothing happens?

No ideas. No excitement. Just that frustrating, heavy feeling of being completely stuck.

If that’s you right now, you’re not alone—and more importantly, there’s NOTHING wrong with YOU. (Repeat that out loud please.)

Creativity isn’t something we can force on demand. It ebbs and flows, just like everything else in life.

And sometimes, the most creative thing you can do… is give yourself permission to pause.

What to Do When You Hit a Creative Block

I’m told everyone has days when they just can’t seem to create.

And you know what? That’s absolutely true.

But from what I’ve seen over the years, the real issue isn’t the lack of creativity… it’s the pressure we put on ourselves to make something spectacular every single time we sit down to create.

Here’s your reminder:

You don’t have to.

Over the past few weeks, my own creative mojo has completely disappeared. Between being laid up in bed with a virus, the exhaustion of travel to OnStage, a fall that left me dealing with ongoing back pain, some disappointing class news, and the emotional weight of missing my daughter as her birthday approaches tomorrow… it’s been a lot.

And just when I thought that might be enough, my mum had a mini-stroke last Friday (thankfully, she’s doing much better than we first feared and will hopefully be home soon).

So it’s no surprise that creativity has taken a back seat.

Because here’s the truth we don’t talk about enough:

Creativity doesn’t thrive under pressure, exhaustion, or emotional overload.

It needs space. Gentle moments. Permission to just be.

Gentle Ways to Find Your Creative Mojo Again

If you’re feeling stuck in a creative block, instead of forcing yourself to make something amazing, try shifting your focus—or even stepping away completely.

🎵 Start with your mood

Put on music that matches how you’re feeling—not how you think you should feel. Then grab your art journal or a blank page and just… begin.

🎨 Focus on one simple thing

Pick a colour, like pink, and build from there. What stamps, stencils, or textures would work with it?

Or keep it even simpler—grab a fine black pen and doodle. Flowers, shapes, patterns… whatever comes naturally. No rules, no expectations.

This is a beautiful way to ease back into creativity without pressure, especially if you’re looking for simple papercrafting ideas.

✂️ Play with backgrounds

Some days, I don’t “make” anything at all—I just create backgrounds. They might 12″ X12″ scrapbook backgrounds, art journal spreads or card fronts.

Pull out your scraps of patterned paper and cardstock, tear the edges, and layer them across a page. Try different layouts and combinations. Just play.

This kind of low-pressure play is often where the best card making inspiration begins.

Then stop.

You don’t need to turn it into a finished project.

🏷 Make bits and pieces

On other days, I’ll make tags, little pockets, “card candy,” or cut out a bunch of meaningful words, sentiments and phrases.

These small elements become a treasure trove of craft inspiration for future projects—especially on days when your creativity flows more easily.

☕ Create a no-pressure ritual

Make a cup of tea or coffee, light a candle, and simply sit with your supplies—without any expectation of creating something finished.

🧺 Limit your supplies

Choose just a few items to work with—one stamp set, one colour, one embellishment. Fewer choices can make it much easier to begin.

🔄 Lift, don’t reinvent

Go back to a project you’ve loved and recreate it with a small twist—different colours, a new sentiment, or a change in layout.

🧠 Do a brain dump

Write down ideas, colour combos, or project thoughts—no matter how unfinished or random. Clearing the mental clutter can often spark fresh creative ideas. A physical clean up can help too (Check out my previous series on declutter your physical craft space.)

🎁 Create for one person

Think of someone specific and create with them in mind. Giving your project a purpose can help guide your creativity naturally.

🌿 Step away and change your environment

Go outside. Get some fresh air. Sit in the sunshine. A change of surroundings can shift your energy more than you expect.

Have a chat with a close friend. Browse through your favourite photos—one might catch your eye. Visit a gallery, wander through your favourite shop, or admire department store window displays.

Inspiration is everywhere.

There are no rules when it comes to finding creative inspiration.

💡 Seek gentle inspiration

Spend a little time on Pinterest or YouTube—but keep it short and intentional. Let it inspire you, not overwhelm you.

A Final Thought

If your creativity feels blocked, it’s not because you’ve lost it.

It’s because something else in your life needs your energy right now.

Give yourself permission to step away. To rest. To not create at all.

Your creativity hasn’t gone anywhere—it’s just waiting for you to feel like yourself again.

And when you do… it’ll be right there, ready.

Are you in a creating season right now… or a resting one?

Until Next time… happy creating.
