The wait is finally over—the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System is here!
Although I don’t own the Hot Foil System yet, I’ve been following the launch closely and watching the demonstrations released by Stampin’ Up!. As with any major new product release, I know there will be plenty of questions about how it works, how it compares to other foiling systems and whether it’s the right investment for different crafters. So, I thought I’d put together this handy FAQ to answer the questions I expect many of you will be asking.
My Honest First Impression

I’ll be completely honest—when the Stampin’ Hot Foil System was first announced, my initial reaction was, “No, I don’t think that’s an investment I’d like to make.”
The reason was simple. I already own a Heidi Swapp Minc machine, and I love it. Although I probably only use it two or three times each year, it has always produced beautiful results for the type of foiling I enjoy.
As I watched more demonstrations, however, I realised this isn’t simply another way to add foil to a project—it’s a completely different technique with its own creative possibilities.
Being a demonstrator and class teacher also means I like to learn new techniques so I can answer your questions, share ideas and help you decide whether a product is right for you.
For that reason, the Hot Foil System has moved onto my wish list. I’ll invest in one when my budget allows and, when I do, I’ll share my honest thoughts, successes and lessons learned.
What is the Stampin’ Hot Foil System?
The Stampin’ Hot Foil System creates stunning metallic images, sentiments and decorative accents.
Working together with the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine, specially designed Hot Foil Dies and Stampin’ Hot Foil Rolls (currently in three gorgeous colours) use heat and pressure to transfer foil directly onto card stock, creating crisp, professional-looking metallic designs.
Whether you’re making greeting cards, scrapbook layouts, gift tags or home décor projects, hot foiling adds an elegant finishing touch.
Here’s a helpful video from Stampin’ Up! that shows how it works:
Is it the same as the Heidi Swapp Minc?
No—and this is probably the question I’ve been asked most often.
Although both systems create metallic foiled designs, they work in completely different ways.
The Minc uses a heated laminator and requires a toner-printed image (or another toner-based product). Heat bonds the foil to the toner as the project passes through the laminator.
By comparison, the Stampin’ Hot Foil System doesn’t use toner. Instead, it uses specially designed Hot Foil Dies together with heat and pressure to transfer foil directly onto your card stock.
Both systems produce beautiful results. They simply achieve those results using different techniques.
| Feature | Heidi Swapp Minc | Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System |

| Requires toner? | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Uses Hot Foil Dies? | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Uses a laminator? | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Requires a Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine? | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |

Is it related to the Spellbinders Hot Foil System?
Yes.
Stampin’ Up! shared that it collaborated with Spellbinders to develop this updated hot foiling platform.
Anyone familiar with Spellbinders will recognise the underlying technology. Stampin’ Up! has paired that technology with its own range of Hot Foil Dies, coordinating stamp sets and accessories designed specifically for this system.
Can I use my existing cutting dies?
No.
Hot Foil Dies and Cutting Dies perform completely different jobs.
Cutting dies cut shapes from card stock.
Hot Foil Dies transfer metallic foil.
Using either product for something it wasn’t designed to do could damage your dies or your machine, so it’s best to use each one for its intended purpose.
Can I use my Spellbinders Hot Foil Plates?
Many people have already asked this question.
Stampin’ Up! has only tested the Hot Foil System with Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil products and states that its one-year warranty applies when the system is used as directed with the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine and Stampin’ Up! hot foil products.
You can choose to experiment with products from other manufacturers, but it’s worth understanding how that may affect your warranty.
Why doesn’t it work with other die-cutting machines?
It’s understandable that some people feel disappointed that the Stampin’ Hot Foil System has been designed specifically for the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine.
When you think about it, though, there are dozens of die-cutting systems on the market. Each one has different platform sizes, roller pressures and manufacturing tolerances. Testing every possible combination would take an enormous amount of time.
Instead, Stampin’ Up! chose to focus on designing and testing a system that integrates with its own Cut & Emboss Machine. That decision also allows the company to stand behind the product with a warranty when it’s used as directed.
What about the price?
I’ve also seen some strong opinions online about the price. ($280 AUD)
The reality is that not every crafting tool fits every crafter’s budget—and that’s perfectly okay.
Most of us have wish lists that are far longer than our craft budgets! We all make decisions about where we’d like to invest based on the types of projects we enjoy creating and how often we’ll use a particular tool.
Personally, I’d still love to add a Cricut, a Brother ScanNCut and a 3D printer to my own craft room one day. They’re all on my wish list. Right now, though, they’re not where I choose to spend my crafting budget.
For some people, the Hot Foil System will become an exciting addition to their craft room. Others may decide to save for it, while some may choose not to purchase it at all. Every one of those decisions is perfectly valid.
One of the things I love most about paper crafting is that beautiful projects don’t depend on owning every tool. Creativity isn’t measured by the size of your craft room or the latest machine on your desk. Instead, it’s about enjoying the process and making the most of the supplies you have.
Do I need a Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine?
Yes.
You’ll need both the Stampin’ Hot Foil System and the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine to use this technique.
Is there a bonus class?
Yes!
Anyone who purchases the Stampin’ Hot Foil System before 4 January 2027 will automatically receive access to the exclusive Metallic Magic Craft Class.
The virtual class includes techniques, tips and inspiration designed to help you get the most from your new Hot Foil System.
Should I order sooner rather than later?
Stampin’ Up! has advised that interest in the Hot Foil System has been exceptionally strong.
Additional stock is already on order. However, these machines take much longer to manufacture than most Stampin’ Up! products, so there could be a wait if the first shipment sells out.
If you’ve already decided the Hot Foil System belongs in your craft room, I’d recommend ordering sooner rather than later.
I’d Love Your Thoughts
Are you thinking about adding the Hot Foil System to your craft room, or are you happy with the foiling tools you already own?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. If you have another question that I haven’t answered here, let me know and I’ll happily add it to this FAQ.
Until next time…
Happy creating!

💖 Disclosure: At the time of writing, 10 July 2026, I don’t yet own the Stampin’ Hot Foil System. This article is based on the information released by Stampin’ Up! and the demonstrations I’ve watched. Once I purchase the system myself, I’ll update this post with my own hands-on experience, tips and honest review.
